Wet Pour Rubber Sub Base

Thursday 30th of May 2019

Wetpour surfacing remains a hugely popular surfacing safety standard used in playgrounds and park areas up and down the UK. As well as being constructed to offer shock resistance and protection in case of trips and falls, it is also impervious to weather and water damage.  Water and heavy weather can greatly damage surfacing that is left to decay over the years.

Therefore, it makes sense to lead with a surfacing standard which won't deteriorate.  A wet pour surface will withstand almost everything you throw at it – though there are many different factors and choices you will have to bear in mind!

Durability and strength are key.  Wetpour surfacing is just one of our many specialist areas.  However, we are always pleased to install it for our clients!

There is nothing more important than keeping children safe.  In this quick introduction to wetpour, we will discuss some of the surfacing's best properties and will look at how these systems work in practice.

Wetpour Sub Base Specifications

There are many wetpour sub base specifications which will work best for durability and safety.  These are graded based on thickness and on their abilities to support different critical fall heights.

You will ideally need to lay wetpour on a sub-base which can guarantee robustness and solidity.  You should also look for a sub-base which can offer heavy porosity, which means that water can safely drain through without causing any damage to your surfacing.

Here are the three main types of wetpour sub surface we recommend from project to project, along with what you can expect from your installation.

Type 1 Stone Sub Base Spec

  • A porous, type 1 stone base is highly recommended. Loose stones are compacted enough to offer stability and form but are arranged in such a manner that water flow and drainage can be maximised.
  • Type 1 stone can generally be installed fairly easily and is also seen by many as a cost-effective option.
  • You will need to excavate ground to a depth of around 125mm, without taking into account wetpour surfacing. Rest assured, we will be on hand to calculate the finer points with you.  Therefore, you will always know what to expect before we get started!
  • Wet pour rubber sub base solutions in this form are also highly recommended. An open textured porous macadam sub-base offers maximum drainage, which means there will be absolutely no risk of pooling or puddling on your surface.
  • This type of sub-base will require a little deeper excavation as well as room for macadam screed, which means the process may be a little more involved than a type 1 installation.
  • However, for the money and effort involved, you will arguably get more weather-resistant results.

Open Textured Porous Macadam Sub-Base

  • Wet pour rubber sub base solutions in this form are also highly recommended. An open textured porous macadam sub-base offers maximum drainage, which means there will be absolutely no risk of pooling or puddling on your surface.
  • This type of sub-base will require a little deeper excavation as well as room for macadam screed, which means the process may be a little more involved than a type 1 installation.
  • However, for the money and effort involved, you will arguably get more weather-resistant results.

No-Fines Porous Concrete Sub-base Specification

  • A no-fines porous concrete sub-base specification will make use of concrete which can support maximum drainage.
  • No-fines means that there are, essentially, no fine pieces. This means water can steadily flow through to the soil below the sub-base without it pooling on the surface beforehand.  This allows for maximum soaking.
  • This sub-base method will also likely require the deepest excavation of the three we are considering. There will also be a need for stone compacting and concrete screed.
  • Once again, the price and effort involved will more than pay for the great results you need for years to come.
